The next thing we're going to do is create a custom field. Custom fields are used for storing information that is specific to your charity. If, for example, you run a dog charity, you may need a custom field to store dog names.

Let's go ahead and create a field now. In our example, we're going to create a field where people can choose their favourite colour.

You can follow along with either the written or video steps.

link Video steps:

help_outline For a list of all available field types, click here.

link Written steps:

  1. From the sidebar, click on the 'People' record type. sidebar people

  2. Click on the new record you created in the last step or on any other record.

  3. From within the record, click on the customisation cog icon in the top right corner. customisation cog

  4. You are now in customisation mode, where you can change the layout of fields, field names, and create custom fields.

error_outline Any changes you make to this record, when in customisation mode, will change across all records of the same type (e.g. all people records).

  1. Click on the overview card (be careful not to click on one of the fields or you'll be customising the field rather than creating a new one)

  2. You should now be looking at the following box: Create new field

Click on the 'CREATE NEW FIELD' button

  1. You can now set the following:

    • Field label: this is the name of the field, as it will show up on your records
    • Help text: this is optional but is very helpful for ambiguous field titles. This will produce a question mark next to the field that will show this text when you hover your mouse over it.
    • Field type: your choice here will be dependent on which type of data you want to store. For a full list of field types and what they do, click here.
    • Default value: usually this will be blank but occasionally you may want every record to have a default value; this is where you would set that.

Create new field 2

  1. For our example, we're going to create a drop-down menu to find out what a person's favourite colour is:

You have two options for entering in drop-down options.

Option 1: You can manually type the options and hit return.

Option 2: You can click on the 'Click to add items in bulk' button and add a list. As long as that list is separated by line breaks then you can add all the options at once.

  1. Click the 'CREATE' button.

there's more

link But wait...there's more

There's so much more you can do! This is definitely more advanced stuff so feel free to skip it for now but whe you have a chance, come back and try some of the following:

  1. Creating one of 4 types of cards:
  2. Editing a card
  3. Show or hide fields
  4. Edit a field
  5. Delete a field
  6. Re-order a field or a card
